What Causes Insomnia?
Sleeplessness, or Insomnia has many causes:
- Psychopathological, such as worry - brought on by any number of events in daily life;
- Medical - many and varied, particularly any disease accompanied by physical pain and discomfort;
- Dietary - such as the pre-bedtime snack, or certain foods that are known stimulants -
- coffee - stimulates the adrenals;
- salt - stimulates the adrenals.
Drugs and Insomnia
WARNING:   Taking drugs to overcome insomnia is adding insult to injury. A sleeping pill paralyses the part of the brain that controls dreaming and therefore it does not produce restful sleep. There follows a state of rigid unconsciousness, and this produces a tired, unrested body and mind.
Sleeping pills can also intensify depression, and to top it off, prescription sleeping drugs are highly addictive.
To the body, the drug is a poison to be neutralised, and soon the drowsiness and loss of consciousness (which are the toxic effects of the drug) are eclipsed by the body's defences. The patient then must take a double dose to get the same effect. Most sleeping drugs begin to lose their effectiveness in two weeks, and patients are led up the garden path of addiction so gently they do not realise what is happening to them.
Insomnia Help
  Calcium and Magnesium are two crucial minerals for good sleep. A constant supply of Calcium is required in the circulating bloodstream for the building of bone, the maintenance of body pH, and the control of electronic impulses transmitted through the nerves. If the concentration of Calcium falls below normal the nerves lack the basic material that quietens them down.
Muscle cells deprived of Calcium go into tetany - a state of continuous contraction - and unless there is enough Calcium on your bloodstream to meet the demands of your muscles and nerves there will not be enough reaching your brain to shut off the constant signals that keep you awake.
Note:   The older you get the more calcium your body needs because your ability to absorb Calcium diminishes with age.
Note:   Calcium requires Magnesium for efficient metabolism so be sure your Calcium supplement is properly balanced with adequate Magnesium.
  If cramp occurs during the night, the body needs Magnesium. This can be remedied by keeping a the Biochemic Tissue salt Mag Phos (8) on your bedside table. If one dose does not solve the problem, rpeat at 20 minut intervals until the cramp goes.
  If there is no milk intolerance a glass of warm milk befor bed, sweetened with honey, can help. Honey is a natural sedative.
Note: Always buy the darkest-colored honey available. Dark honeys contain more minerals than light honeys.
