Diabetes - Causes, Symptoms and Help

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes results when the body is unable to make full use of the carbohydrates (sugars and starches) we eat. Either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to process these sugars for use and storage in the body, or because the insulin produced is less effective than it should be, the sugar (glucose) stays in the blood, accumulating there until it spills over into the kidneys and the urine.

Symptoms of Diabetes

The most obvious symptoms of diabetes are insatiable thirst, excessive urination, excessive hunger, weight loss, and weakness and fatigue. These symptoms are all rooted in the kidneys' efforts to remove excess, unprocessed glucose from the bloodstream. Ever-increasing amounts of urine are continually required to dissolve the concentrated glucose and get it out of the body.

After Diagnosis

Once a diagnosis has been made, the doctor and the patient must work together to restore a carbohydrate balance in the system, while maintaining a good nutritional status.

The ideal concentration of glucose in the blood is normally 140mg per 100cc after meals. Diabetics rarely achieve this level but they can function at near normal levels arrived at by diet, diet in combination with insulin, or by diet, insulin and drugs, in severe cases.

In the early stages the doctor must determine whether a diet regulated to minimise carbohydrate intake alone will control the blood sugar levels, or whether insulin must be added. Doctors generally avoid prescribing insulin when diet can do the job because of the frightening reactions that can occur from using insulin.

Insulin shock results from too much insulin getting rid of too mush sugar at a time. Some sugar is essential in the bloodstream - without it the body cannot function. If the blood sugar sinks too low in the diabetic, he suffers blurred vision, sudden weakness or dizziness, and eventually collapse. Diabetics often carry concentrated sweet or sugar cubes to counteract such an emergency.

During the early weeks of insulin treatment, swelling - particularly in the face - is common. Changes of vision also occur. In certain patients, a general allergic reaction to insulin creates serious consequences.
