Alzheimer's and Ginkgo Biloba

This review of English and non-English articles on the use of Ginkgo biloba in patients with dementia or cognitive impairment resulted in significant overall findings.

Inclusion criteria for this review were stringent, so that of more than 50 articles identified only 4 were accepted.

The results stated that there is a significant effect from 3 to 6 month treatments with 120-240mg of Ginkgo biloba extract on objective measures of congnitive function in Alzheimer's disease.

No adverse effects were noted, but there were 2 case reports of bleeding conmplications.

The authors note that further research will need to be done to determine exactly which ingredients in the Ginkgo extract produce its effects in patient with Alzheimers disease.
